Chris Cornell is dead. Perhaps one of the best and most powerful rock voices in the last decades. Coincidence or not, this last week I have been re-listening in the car a compilation of Soundgarden that I had forgotten. It wasn't a background music listening, but I really focused, tasting and wondering at this band. What a coincidence! Worth of an X-file. R.I.P., Chris. Long live rock'n'roll!
Many people know the band Kansas thanks to the famous "Dust In The Wind". But this ballad is not at all representative of the discography of this great progressive rock band. Today I put forward to hear two of my favorite Kansas's songs: "Song For America" with the wonderful Robby Steinhardt's violin , and "Lonely Street", a kind of hard blues in which Steve Walsh demonstrates his vocal power.
Guns N 'Roses occupied the throne of the kings of Hard Rock during the late 80's and early 90's. They fused and modernized some 70 sounds (they sounded to me like a mix of Aerosmith and Sex Pistols). Much of theis success was also a result of their formidable concerts, as well as the publicity because of the scandals of the band members.
Lenny Kravitz is a brilliant musician who has been able to attract 70's music fans from very different genres (hard rock, funk, R&B, soul, pop, etc.). But despite his "vintage" sound, he has been able to incorporate modern elements to his compositions that all kind of audiences like. So he has became one of the best-selling rock artists of the world. See a live performance of his early years. My admired Cindy Blackman plays drums.

"All Right Now" is probably the most famous theme by the British band "Free". Today, however, I would like you to listen to one of my favorite songs: "Mr. Big". A theme supported by Simon Kirke's solid drums. A clear demonstration that silences are also music. Paul Rodgers on vocals, Paul Kossoff on the guitar and Andy Fraser on the bass show us their great feeling. The performance took place at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a legendary song by Iron Butterfly, which began to mix psychedelic rock and hard rock. The theme has a duration of 17 minutes. In its central part included some fantastic organ, guitar and drums solos. Obviously, they had to edit also a short version, because radio stations refused to broadcast songs over 3 minutes long. Something that somehow still happens today.
There was a huge density of good rock bands in the 70s. Cactus is a good illustration of those hundreds of bands that never reached worldwide fame despite being as good or better than many other bands that did make history. Two of the band members, drummer Carmine Appice and bassist Tim Bogert, appeared in this blog long playing a version of Superstition with Jeff Beck (click here to watch it). Today I bring a song titled "Evil". Turn up the speaker volume to maximum.
"Lynyrd Skynyrd" is one of the must-hear bands of the 70's Southern Rock (from the south of the US). Their best known song is "Sweet Home Alabama" but I want to talk about my favorite one: "Free Bird". A super-song that begins softly, talking about a farewell, with a spectacular slide guitar and a tender solo piano. But from the 6:50 minute the song becomes wild, giving us one of the most thrilling electric guitar duets in rock history. Smashing! I highly suggest you to savour the whole song from start to end.
Although "Kashmir" is not the most popular song by Led Zeppelin, more than one member of the band has said that it's maybe their best composition. Kashmir appeared in my favorite Led Zep's album: Physical Graffiti, 1975. However I bring you a 1979 recording.
An encore: a 1995 performance, when Page and Plant reunited to record a reworking of Led Zeppelin classics. For playing Kashmir they were accompanied by an Egyptian traditional orchestra that creates a beautiful fusion. I had the pleasure of enjoying a concert within that tour.
Queen is undoubtedly one of the best rock bands of the twentieth century. And Freddie Mercury is probably one of the best singers. They mixed hard rock, pop, symphonic rock and many other ingredients in a very interesting way. Despite the originality and complexity of many of their compositions, they reaped a great commercial success among the general public. Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece. Here you are.
The Faces, The Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992).
The Black Crowes is one of my favorite bands of recent times. This is not a surprise to those who know my musical tastes, as this group exudes influences from 70's rock: The Faces, The Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc.. Listen to a live performance of "My Morning Song", excerpted from one of their best albums: The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992).
The last 10th of February I put on Peter Frampton's music and the 27th some of The Faces. Well, Humble Pie is a band started by the singer Steve Marriott when he left Small Faces (then Rod Stewart replaced him and that group was renamed The Faces). Marriott recruited, among others, Peter Frampton (who began his solo career later, as we saw). Today I bring a brutal version of "I don't need no doctor" in one of their deafening concerts. Marriott's voice is great, Frampton play his original scales brilliantly and the whole band emits energy to fire up a couple of nuclear power plants.
(me ha costado parar de poner ejemplos) o el inicio de canciones como Lazy, Walking in the Shadows of the Blues, o la mítica Child in Time.
Jon Lorddied yesterday. One of themost important(and probablymost famous) keyboard playersinrock history. Deep Purple andWhitesnakehavetheir place in theHall of Fame thanks to the crucial roleplayed byJon Lord. I will never forgethis soloson songs sach as HighwayStar, Fireball, Space Truckin ', Burn, "A" 200,Keep OnMoving, etc. (it was really hard to stop givingexamples)or the beginningof songs likeLazy, Walking in the Shadowsof the Blues, or the mythicalChild In Time.
The band Steppenwolf (named after the Herman Hesse novel) created "Born to be Wild", a song that became an ode to freedom Part of the significance of this song is because it was part of the soundtrack of the legendary film "Easy Rider" and also because it's said that this was the first time that the term "heavy metal" appeared in the lyrics of a song.

¡Disfruten del show!
The band KISS is an institution in the U.S. and a phenomenon, not just musical, worthy of study. I recommend you browse information about them anywhere. You will find cool facts. I post the theme that opened the album Alive II (an album that I found years ago in a 2nd hand music store). I had not heard them before and I remember I found them softer than I expected considering the look of the musicians. Certain songs can not even be considered hard-rock, but simply rock'n'roll. Even the naif way in which the drummer played reminded me of Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. Enjoy the show!
Soundgarden was lumped together under the name of grunge. A grouping that I never understood, because Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc., had little in common musically. Personally I always felt predilection for Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, perhaps because they feed clearly from the hard rock of the 70s. I always find a scent of Black Sabbath in Soundgarden music. Chris Cornell, lead singer, is considered by many people one of the best contemporary voices.
David Coverdale was the lead singer during one of the most brilliant eras of Deep Purple. He afterwards founded his own band: Whitesnake. This band began making hard rock with some aromas of rythm'n'blues. Well into the 80s they bordered on glam-heavy, making music with a more commercial style, backcombed hairs and stuff. Below I'll post a theme from the early days of Whitesnake (my favorite), taken from an album called Ready and Willing. Attention, because Jon Lord plays the keyboard and Ian Paice plays the drums (both ex-Deep Purple).
Everyone is more familiar with the short singer of the cap (the great Brian Johnson) simply because he has been in AC/DC for many years, but some people think the best songs of the group were made at the time the sadly late Bon Scott was the singer. Let me introduce you to AC/DC and its emblematic song "Sin City".
Grand Funk Railroad is another of my reference bands. They were called "The American Cream" because they became a power trio of great success, I suppose. But I think Grand Funk are closer to hard rock (at least in their early albums). They created a thick sound distorting bass and guitar. The concerts of this band were spectacular because of the energy deployed. Stadiums were packed.
