Jeff Beck - Star Cycle
Es muy difícil hablar de Jeff Beck sin que surjan debates acerca de los tres grandes guitarristas que pasaron por la mítica banda The Yardbirds a mediados de los 60 y acabarían convirtiéndose en leyendas de la guitarra. Jimmy Page creó una de las bandas de rock duro más grandes de todos los tiempos: Led Zeppelin. Eric Clapton, por su parte, también ha tenido una carrera exitosa moviéndose entre el blues, el rock y el pop. Y, por último, Jeff Beck, es tal vez el que menos éxito comercial ha tenido, pero, para mi gusto, el más experimental y virtuoso de los tres.

Ayer acudí a un concierto. Mi tío Manolo volvía a subirse a un escenario después de varias décadas alejado de la música. Cuántas alegrías nos tiene siempre reservada la música. El repertorio estuvo repleto de magníficos oldies. Uno de ellos fue "Nights in White Satin" de The Moody Blues.

Eagles - Hotel California + Victim of Love
Los Eagles eran una reconocida banda de country-rock, pero la incorporación del guitarrista Don Felder y más tarde del genial Joe Walsh provocarían una deriva de la banda hacia sonidos más rockeros. Quizás el ejemplo más representativo de esta revolución sonora sea su álbum Hotel California. Traigo dos temas como muestra: una interpretación en directo de su afamado tema "Hotel California" (prohibido perderse el solo de guitarras a partir del minuto 4:20) y "Victim of Love", tal vez mi corte favorito de ese disco (prohibido también perderse el solo de guitarra a partir del minuto 2:35).
The Eagles were a renowned country-rock band. But one day guitarist Don Felder joined the band, and the great Joe Walsh joined the band too a few later. Both of them caused an evolution of the band towards rock sound. Perhaps the most representative example of this sound revolution is their album Hotel California. Eric Clapton ha pasado por innumerables bandas históricas como los Bluesbreakers de John Mayall, los Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith o Derek and The Dominoes. Pero también ha cosechado importantes éxitos en su carrera en solitario. Disfrutemos de Bad Love (Spoiler: En el min 3:20 parece que la canción acaba. Pero no acaba. ;))

David Bowie - Sweet Thing + My Death
A David Bowie le llamaban El Camaleón. El apodo le venía por su gran facilidad para cambiar su estética y hacer incursiones en todo tipo de géneros musicales. Pero, para mí, su mayor habilidad camaleónica tiene que ver con el uso de la voz. Creo que es el cantante de rock al que más registros y matices de voz he escuchado. A veces, incluso, dentro de una misma canción, con un uso teatral, para interpretar diferentes personajes o emociones. Escuchad, a modo de ejemplo, esta "Sweet Thing". No os perdáis las evoluciones de la voz desde su entrada en el segundo 37.

Lenny Kravitz es un músico brillante que ha conseguido captar a fans de la música de los 70 de estilos muy diversos (rock duro, funk, R&B, soul, pop, etc.). Pero, a pesar de su sonido "vintage", ha sabido incorporar elementos modernos a sus composiciones que han enganchado a audiencias de todo tipo, hasta el punto de ser uno de los artistas de rock con mayores ventas en el mundo.
Aquí dejo una actuación en directo de sus primeros años. Aparece a la batería mi admirada Cindy Blackman.

Steve Winwood ha formado parte de grandes grupos históricos, como el Spencer Davis Group, Traffic o Blind Faith (junto a dos exmiembros del supertrío Cream: Eric Clapton a la guitarra y Ginger Baker a la batería). Escuchad a este original cantante, teclista y compositor en una actuación en directo con Blind Faith en Hyde Park en 1969.

"All Right Now" es probablemente el tema más conocido de la banda británica "Free". Hoy, sin embargo, me gustaría que escuchaseis uno de mis canciones favoritas: "Mr. Big". Un tema sostenido por la sólida batería de Simon Kirke. Y una demostración de que los silencios también son música. Paul Rodgers a la voz, Paul Kossoff a la guitarra y Andy Fraser al bajo dan muestra de su gran feeling. La actuación pertenece al mítico Festival de la Isla de Wight en el 70.

The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post
Los Allman Brothers son, sin duda, unos músicos míticos. Fueron pioneros dentro del rock sureño. Excelentes compositores y grandes intérpretes. La trágica muerte de Duane Allman arrebató al mundo del rock una nueva leyenda de la guitarra, justo cuando el público empezaba a reconocer su talento (en especial tras grabar con Eric Clapton el álbum de "Derek and The Dominos"). Sin embargo, a pesar de la pérdida de uno de sus líderes, la banda no dejó de hacer excelentes álbumes y directos.

The tragic death of Duane Allman snatched a new guitar legend from the world of Rock, just when the public began to acknowledge his talent (especially after recording with Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominos). However, despite the loss of one of their leaders, the band continued making excellent albums and live performances.

Sting es probablemente uno de los músicos más respetados a nivel mundial. No sólo por ser uno de los miembros del mítico grupo The Police, sino también por su carrera en solitario. La producción de sus discos en solitario es exquisita y me enseñó a apreciar el gusto por el buen sonido en una época en la que yo era más amante de la distorsión y la caña.

Cactus - Evil
En los años 70 hubo una enorme densidad de buenas bandas de rock. Cactus es un buen ejemplo de esos cientos de bandas que nunca llegaron a alcanzar fama mundial a pesar de ser tan buenas o más que muchas otras que sí pasaron a la historia. Dos de los miembros del grupo, el batería Carmine Appice y el bajista Tim Bogert, ya pasaron por este blog hace mucho tiempo haciendo una versión del Superstition junto a Jeff Beck (hacer click aquí para verla). Hoy traigo un tema titulado "Evil". Sube el volumen de los altavoces al máximo.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen es, sin duda, una de las mejores bandas de rock del siglo XX. Y Freddie Mercury, probablemente uno de los mejores cantantes. Hicieron una interesante mezcla de rock duro, pop, rock sinfónico y otros muchos ingredientes. A pesar de la originalidad y complejidad de algunos de sus temas, cosecharon un gran éxito comercial entre el público general. Os dejo con una obra de arte: Bohemian Rhapsody.

El Muro de Berlín cayó un 9 de Noviembre de 1989. A los pocos meses de este acontecimiento, Roger Waters lideró la organización de un macro concierto en el que se interpretaría "The Wall", álbum que compuso en su etapa en Pink Floyd. Contó con artistas invitados como Van Morrison, Scorpions, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, The Band, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Carrack, Bryan Adams, etc. Veamos la interpretación del tema "Comfortably Numb".

El mejicano Carlos Santana es una de las leyendas de la guitarra y seguramente el padre del rock latino. Saltó a la fama a partir de su actuación en el festival de Woodstock en 1969. Desde entonces no ha parado de regalarnos canciones meomorables, mezclando el blues, el rock, el jazz y la música latina.
