I listened to the entire song, still half asleep, plunged into darkness. The sensory experience was almost psychedelic. At the end of the song the announcer introduced Soft Machine to me. King Crimson fue probablemente una de las primeras bandas de rock sinfónico que escuché (después de Pink Floyd). El primer álbum que escuché fue el mítico "In The Court Of The Crimson King", con aquella impactante portada que representaba la cara desencajada del "hombre esquizoide". Sin embargo, hoy traigo un tema de una etapa posterior (álbum "Red", 1974). La canción se llama "Starless". Se pueden distinguir tres pasajes. La cancíón empieza con un tema melódico y vocal. En la parte intermedia (mi favorita) el grupo parece entrar en trance: Robert Fripp mantiene impasible las dos mismas notas en la guitarra, mientras el bajo y la batería se encargan de ir haciendo el tema progresivamente más salvaje, hasta llevarnos al tercer pasaje. Esta última parte es un trepidante pasaje blues-jazz que termina retomando el tema inicial. Toda una obra de arte.
King Crimson was probably one of the first progressive-rock bands I've ever heard (after Pink Floyd). The first album I've ever heard by them was the legendary "In The Court Of The Crimson King", with that stunning cover depicting the unhinged face of "Schizoid Man". However, today I bring a song of a later stage (1974 album "Red" ). The song is called "Starless". There are three passages. The song begins with a melodic and vocal theme. In the second part (my favorite one) the band seems to go into a trance: Robert Fripp keeps the same two notes on the guitar, while the theme becomes progressively wilder thanks to bass and drums evolutions, taking us up to the third passage. This last part is a frenetic blues-jazz theme which ends returning to the opening theme. An artwork.
En la portada del primer álbum de Kansas aparecía un dibujo que representaba una escena de la guerra civil norteamericana. Cuando la vi pensé que probablemente se trataría de un grupo de Kansas que haría rock sureño o música country. Efectivamente, los músicos eran de Kansas, pero hacían un espectacular rock sinfónico con toques de rock duro. Si la flauta es la seña de identidad de Jethro Tull, en Kansas es el violín el que hace peculiar al grupo. Mis discos favoritos de Kansas son los primeros, hasta que a finales de los 70 empiezan a hacer una música más comercial. Son instrumentistas virtuosos (como casi todos los grupos de rock sinfónico), pero además tienen unas voces impresionantes.
On the cover of the first album of Kansas you could see a drawing representing a scene from the American Civil War. When I saw it I thought it probably would be a band from Kansas playing southern rock or country music. Indeed, the musicians were from Kansas, but they played a spectacular symphonic rock with a touch of hard rock. Whether the flute is the hallmark of Jethro Tull, the violin makes Kansas unique. My favorite Kansas albums are the first ones, because in the late 70 they started writing a more commercial music. They are virtuoso instrumentalists (like almost all symphonic rock bands), but Kansas also has amazing vocals.
"Jethro Tull" es uno de los grandes del rock progresivo británico, y tal vez de los más populares entre personas no aficionadas a este estilo musical. Uno de los motivos por los que es tan reconocido y reconocible es por su flautista (y además excepcional vocalista, guitarrista, teclista, etc.) Ian Anderson. Aparte de tener muchísimos temas míticos, Jethro Tull roza la perfección como conjunto de instrumentistas. Sus directos son espectaculares, sobre todo por la energía que desprende el majareta de Ian Anderson: un personaje digno de estudio.
Como hemos celebrado el día del padre, me he decidido por la canción "No lullaby" ("Ninguna canción de cuna"). No os perdáis el solo de flauta.
"Jethro Tull" is one of the giants of British progressive rock, and perhaps one of the most popular bands among people not fond of this musical style. Ian Anderson, the flute player (besides exceptional vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, etc..) is one of the reasons why this band is so recognized and recognizable. As well as composing many mythic songs, Jethro Tull close to perfection as instrumental ensemble. Jethro Tull's live shows are spectacular, especially because of the energy released by the head case Ian Anderson: quite a character. En sus orígenes tuvo en los teclados a Chano Domínguez, que hoy hace carrera en solitario como prestigioso músico de jazz flamenco y latino. "Alameda" es otro icono del Rock Andaluz. Excelentes compositores, letristas e intérpretes. El vocalista, Pepe Roca, tiene la habilidad de provocarme un nudo en la garganta siempre que le escucho cantar. Os traigo uno de mis temas favoritos: "Amanecer en el Puerto". Hasta el minuto 3 parece que estás escuchando a cualquiera de los grandes del rock progresivo británico, pero a partir de ese momento entra de lleno la fusión con el folk andaluz. Una pena que no haya encontrado ningún video con calidad decente de este tema en concierto. Me quitaré la espinita poniendo a continuación otra canción en directo.
"Alameda" is another Andalusian Rock icon. Great composers, lyricists and performers. The singer, Pepe Roca, leaves a lump in one's throat. I bring one of my favorite songs: "Amanecer en el puerto". Up to the minute 3 it seems as if we are listening to any of the great British progressive rock bands, but from that moment the fussion with the Andalusian folk appears. Unfortunately, I did not find any decent quality video of this song in concert. I will bring another song in concert as compensation.

Imán Califato Independiente es otra mítica banda de rock andaluz. Esta banda mezcló el rock sinfónico con el folk andaluz y sonidos arábigo-andaluces. La cara A de su primer disco (producido en 1978) estaba ocupada por una suite instrumental de 20 minutos titulada "Tarantos del Califato Independiente". Escuchad y disfrutad.
Iman Califato Independiente is another legendary Andalusian rock band. This band fused progressive rock with Andalusian folk and Arabian-Andalusian sounds. The A-side of their first album (produced in 1978) was occupied by a 20-minute instrumental suite entitled "Tarantos del Califato Independiente". Listen and enjoy.

La expresión "Rock Andaluz" no se usa para referirse al rock que se hace desde Andalucía, sino a una música que empezaron a hacer allá por los años de la Transición una serie de grupos andaluces, fusionando rock y folk andaluz (básicamente flamenco). De entre estos grupos, mis favoritos son los que combinaron lo andaluz con un estilo cercano al rock progresivo o sinfónico que hacían bandas como Pink Floyd, Camel, Yes, etc. En próximas entregas haré un repaso por algunos de los grupos que más me gustan. Para abrir boca os traigo la canción "Quiero contarte" de los míticos "Triana".
The term "Andalusian Rock" is not used to refer to rock music made in Andalusia, but music that some Andalusian bands began to make around the years of the Transition (from dictatorship to democracy, in the 70s). This bands fused rock and Andalusian folk (Flamenco basically). Among these groups, my favorites are who combined the Andalusian spirit with a style close to the progressive rock made by bands like Pink Floyd, Camel, Yes, etc. In future editions I'll do a review of some of the groups I like the most. To whet your appetite I bring the song "Quiero contarte" by the mythical band "Triana".
Para mi gusto "The Snow Goose" es el mejor álbum de la banda de rock progresivo "Camel". Aquí traigo una actuación televisiva en la que aparecen enlazados varios temas (como en el disco). Marco el minutaje de algunos momentos clave: 2:55; 4:40 y 7:05 (uno de mis solos de guitarra favoritos, con un magnífico Andrew Latimer). Pero ¡qué diablos!, olvidaos del minutaje y vedlo entero. ;-)

Voy a empezar por unos chavales que se animaron a hacer música y no terminaron haciéndolo mal del todo: Pink Floyd. Probablemente una de las mejores bandas de la historia. Y para daros bien la lata me he decidido por un tema de más de 15 minutos. Si no puedes disponer de ese tiempo sin interrupciones no puedo garantizarte la experiencia mística.
